Can I do without a nursery?
I’m sure many new or expecting parents ask, is a nursery room even necessary? I think people underestimate just how many things a little person accumulates overtime from toys, books, clothes, linen, and all sorts of other gear.
Also, whether it be changing, feeding or putting your baby to sleep, you will spend a lot of time in the nursery, so it makes sense to have one.
The question you should ask is, do I want things scattered around the house or do I want a central location for all the baby items?
When is the right time to start preparing for your nursery?
Most parents choose to start setting up and decorating the nursery during the second trimester, however, it can be different for everyone. You should keep in mind, setting up a nursery later in your pregnancy can be tiring, which is why I don’t recommend leaving it too late particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy.
Starting your nursery in the second trimester will give you ample time to shop around, order furniture, repair the room, paint (if needed), and assemble/decorate. Realistically, it can take at least a few weeks to fully set up and decorate a nursery.
How much does it cost to set up a nursery?
Have you heard the saying ‘how long is a piece of string?’, it definitely applies here.
You can spend as much or as little as you want. You can splurge on a nursery but there are also many more affordable options. According to The Bump, it can cost around $2000 to set up a nursery.
What should I include in a nursery?
I wanted to share with you some great ways to make your nursery room that extra special for you and your littlest one to enjoy.
Nursing Chair + Footstool/Ottoman
Whether you decide to breastfeed, or bottle feed your baby, a nursing chair is essential for you and your baby’s comfort and will give you a chance to bond with your baby. Adding a footstool or ottoman will add the extra level of comfort for mum.
Wallpaper or Wall Art
Many parents these days are opting for wallpaper or wall art in the nursery room. It is a more cost-effective solution and comes in a variety of types and materials – the choices are endless. Also, it gives you an option to easily change overtime as your little one grows.
Dresser and Change Pad
Having a dresser with a change pad provides that extra level of comfort and will be beneficial when changing your baby. The dresser will provide you with ample room to fit your baby products such as nappies, creams, diaper bags, clothing, accessories all within arms reach.
You can purchase a change table but a dresser can double up as a change table just by adding the change pad on top. This allows you to remove the change pad later on when you want to use it solely as a dresser. This option also works when you’re limited on space and cannot have both a dresser and change table.
Baby Play Mat
Baby Play Mats not only give your baby a comfortable place to enjoy learning but also a safe place to play on the floor. They come in a range of sizes, colours, and designs to choose from.
Blackout Curtains
Not only are curtains aesthetically pleasing and provide a feeling of cosiness, but they also play an important role in blocking out the bright sunlight to help your little one sleep peacefully. Curtains also come in a variety of designs with plenty of options to choose from.
Shelves
Shelves in the nursery room provide a great opportunity to decorate the space. Adding items such as books, outfits, plush toys, photo frames and small objects will instantly elevate your baby’s room.
